Cass County Missouri Wetlands page 3

Lake 2C covers 12 surface water acres and is over 1/4 mile in length. The lake is surrounded with corn and bean stubble and is a hunt on your own property without blinds for the waterfowl hunter that likes to set up on his own.

By now the concentration of water over the crop acrage of this one spot is well illustrated. each lake and crop field gives opportunity to bring in both ducks and geese well away from the nearby public wetalnds.

The property is on the Settles Ford Flyway which attracts a lot of ducks and geese, especially late season snow geese.

Various vews of 2C.

These lakes receive less pressure than our wetlands with bvlinds.

Just as the migration was getting strong a lot of local family groups and small flocks were flying about in several directions. Some came in and others went on by ignoring our best efforts. All together we had a great day and the dog had more work than he had earlier. It really fired him up. It was his first goose hunt. Try as I did I could not get a good retrieve picture, just too much action.

Cass County Lake 3.

From the dam looking out to the headwaters. Surrounded by crop fields. A view from the dam facing south.

The lake covers 10 to 15 acres of surface water depending on the amount of summer rainfall. This lake was designed as an irrigation lake to water the 240 acre grain field surrounding the lake. On the driest years, we have never seen this lake drop below 10 to 12 feet in depth. As the lake drops in depth during the summer months, natural vegetation, such as smartweed grow around the edges, making good cover for the hunter to hide and winter feed for the ducks and geese.

If an Associatio hunter reserves lake 3 no one else will be allowed to hunt the same lake on the same day unless that Association hunters requests the office to do so.

Mallard Duck HuntsMallards are the primary duck for most of the Association hunetrs.

Late season on a cold winter with 90% frozen surface. Almost a limit. Any duck hunter that calls us and asks how many limits will they get on a hunt we readily recognize as not a do it yourself hunter, but one that measures success only by dead birds. The hunters that enjoys our wetlands the most are those that seek to make the most of the hunt for the hunt quality itself. In our case non -competitive duck hunting.

Lake 4

The first 3 pictures are from standing in one spot and attempting to show the entire water surface from three angles.

This is from the lake's far side looking across to the goose hunting crop field in the background. An attempt to show the size of the water surface area and crop field, this year in corn, that is available for goose decoy spreads.

Lake 4 is an open lake with natural vegetation around the shoreline. The north and west shorelines are flat and gradually drop to deeper water. Chest waders can be used to place decoys, but the huntermust be cautious the lake drops to over 20 feet in the center. For the hunter with a retrieving dog, this is an ideal set up for a makeshift blind to hunt ducks in open water. While the majority of our managed wetlands primarily attract puddle ducks, lake 4 is known for a combination of both puddle ducks and divers. The lake is surrounded with over 200 acres rotated from corn to beans, which can support large goose spreads. Being on the Settles Ford and Grand River Flyway this property can be a major feeding area for both Canada and Snow Geese.
