Non-Resident Duck Hunting Review

We certainly appreciate those members that send us letters and photos.  This web site is entirely built from member contributions.

The letter below is from a new hunter that knows what hunting is - a mix of failure and success.

Dear Jon:

I just wanted to give you an update on how things are going for my 14-year-old son and myself.

We joined your club last year; hunted 3 times with the club and had very good success with our duck hunting once, I believe, of the 3 times we went out. (That had nothing to do with the club--but had everything to do with the weather.)

As far as the club's activities, it was great.  It was everything they said it would be and we just had an overall great time.

This year we have been right on track with the club.  We have now hunted 4 times with the club and I just wanted to comment on 2 of the occasions we hunted with the club in a particular area where we were on a solid 4-5" of ice on the lake.  I've been hunting ducks and geese for the last 30 years and doing it quite consistently--hunting 2-3 times per weeks, not getting down to Missouri as much as I'd like to because of work.  I have to say that we had one of the most memorable hunts on one of your leases and I wish we had a movie camera to show you exactly what I mean.

We had ducks and geese between 10-250 in a flock, all day long.  We took such a pleasure (my 14-year-old, especially) working the ducks and watching them fly.  We'd take one out of the flock and we'd only pick a drake and just savoring the experience...never having this consistency...this constant amount of water foul, working the area...AND NO COMPETITION.  No fighting with others, so to speak, in the blocks and at one time the sky was BLACK with water foul.  My son got to call and these ducks were just specks in the sky and Derek got on the call.  I said, "Derek, it's just not worth your time.  They're too high.  They're migrating."  Nevertheless, he got on the call and worked those ducks and by the time it was all said and done he had somewhere in the neighborhood of THOUSANDS...literally THOUSANDS of mallards, widgeons, gadwalds trying to get in to this 10x10 area that we had cut out of the ice.  Derek's eyes were as  big around as saucers and my mouth dropped in total awe as to what was transpiring.

We only needed one duck to finish our limit and it was Derek's turn to shoot.  At age 14, he decided to watch the spectacle as they were landing all over the ice.  We decided that we had just an amazing day.

There's good times and there's bad times...but these are the times that will live with us forever.

I just wanted to say thank you for putting up with a lot of the hassles that I know you put up with.  I could not do what you two gentlemen do.  With all the responsibilities and the legal hassles that I can only imagine, I just want to say "Thank You" and I hope I live long enough to see another spectacle like that again.  When you can share that type of an experience with your family with something you truly love to do and love spending the time doing it, it's more than a person can ask for.

I wish you the best and very happy holidays.

Thanks Again,

Robert Kopp
