Scouting Improves The Odds For SuccessJust imagine how many fields there are spread across the ten's of thousands of acres this Association has immediately along the Missouri River Bottoms. All of it private farm land that can be used to decoy Canada Geese during the fall and winter season.
This photo is dated December 29, 2000 to show how a middle season goose hunt can be successful. Grady Hill, on the left, spent two mornings in his truck observing the goose flight pattern before he made his reservation. His reconnaissance paid off as he was able to call in six flocks of Canada's for his party of three to harvest a limit in a sportsman like manner. Notice the truck is not packed high with decoys. It was a day his thirteen year old nephew will never forget. His first shot ever at geese ended up being a five year old female that was banded in Iowa when it was too young to fly. Memories that will last forever.
Non-residents may not feel they have the time to scout as this hunter did, but they do as our properties are in close proximity and frequently allow hunting the first morning the goose flight patterns are identified. Decoy spreads as little as two dozen with skilled calling will bring them in as corn stubble and winter wheat is readily available. Your choice is to stay home and watch another home improvement TV show or get out and make some memories.
Jon and James, both dad's are long time friends and their sons are on the same track. 1 Canada, 2 Speckle Bellies and 2 Snows and they harvested them on their own. |
